Impulse Is Creativity in Action

If you live with ADHD, you’ve probably heard the word impulsive used like it’s a flaw that needs fixing.

Too fast. Too much. Too unplanned.

But what if we paused for a second and looked at it from another angle? What if impulse is just creativity in motion? Because here’s the thing—those spontaneous moments aren’t random. They’re ideas jumping the line. They’re your brain saying “Oh! This could be something.” And sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes it’s brilliant. Often it’s both.

As an ADHD mom, impulse can look like deciding to bake at 9 pm, starting three projects before finishing one, or suddenly reorganizing the entire kitchen while the coffee gets cold (again).

It can also look like silly voices at bedtime, last-minute adventures, heartfelt conversations, and kids who grow up knowing that joy doesn’t always need a plan. Yes, impulse can be exhausting. Yes, it can create chaos. And yes, sometimes it means apologizing and laughing at yourself five minutes later. But it’s also where creativity lives.

Impulse is the courage to act before doubt shuts the door. It’s intuition speaking louder than perfection. It’s seeing possibilities where others see “wait.” You’re not careless. You’re responsive. You’re not irresponsible. You’re imaginative. And no, you don’t have to turn every impulse into action. That’s not the point. The point is knowing that this part of you isn’t broken—it’s expressive.

So if today you changed plans, forgot what you walked into the room for, but also created something beautiful, comforting, or joyful in the middle of the chaos… you’re doing just fine.

You’re not alone in this.

There are so many of us out here, thinking fast, feeling deeply, loving hard, and trying our best—with half-finished coffee cups and very full hearts.

Just a little hug from me to you
